In the upcoming playoffs of IPL season 2022, the edition fourth of the Women’s T20 Challenge is going to take place this year, but BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly remained silent on the possibility of a full-fledged league.

The women’s team competition was scheduled to take place last year but nothing could happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has shown some good interest in the women’s league and suggested to the BCCI chief to give priority to the women’s IPL. The former cricketer has encouraged Sourav Ganguly the BCCI President to work on setting up an experienced franchise-based tournament especially for the women’s cricket team.

Michael Vaughan’s statement came just after Ganguly’ addressing to Sportstar magazine:

“The Women’s T20 Challenge will again be back this year in the month of May. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to host a bigger women’s IPL once the number of women players [player pool] goes up. But this year, the Women’s T20 Challenge will happen during the IPL playoffs”

On the other hand, head of the Pakistan Cricket Board Ramiz Raja also showed his eagerness to organize Asia’s first women’s franchise-based cricket league. In a video shared by the board on its social media handle last year, Raza had mentioned that he is looking forward to start the Women’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the coming days.

In 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge took place was the last edition, with three teams competing for the final championship in a round-robin tournament. The next season of the T20 tournament will be played in May.

Several Indian women cricketers, such as Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemima Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana, have stressed the need for a women’s IPL. In 2021, eight Indian women players took part in the Big Bash League in Australia. The demand for women’s IPL has increased since India reached the final of the 2017 ODI World Cup in England. The side had also finished runners-up in the T20 World Cup in 2020, where India defeated Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and New Zealand to top their group.
