Indian team captain Rohit Sharma said some time ago that he wants to prepare the Indian middle order for a situation when Team India loses its 3 wickets for 10 runs and the team wins the match by coming out of that situation. Be it Champions Trophy 2017 or 2019 World Cup semi-finals, every time we have got to see that when Indian top 3 fail then Team India’s defeat is certain. Something similar happened to us in the first two matches of the T20 World Cup 2021 as well. But now this thing of Rohit Sharma seems to be true. Whether it is Test, ODI, or T20 on England tour, Team India has given an example of its strong middle order in every format.

Till the 2019 World Cup, Team India depended heavily on its top 3. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli are included in the top order, one of the batsmen played a key role in the team’s victory by playing long innings, but in the last two years, their shine has faded in front of the middle order. If we look at the figures of the middle order from January 1, 2020, the total average of batsmen from number 4 to 7 in 24 ODIs has been 44.91, which is the best in world cricket. These batsmen also scored a total of four centuries during this period. Only New Zealand (5) is above India in the list of scoring the most centuries from number 4 to number 7 from 2020.

The Indian middle order has appeared strong in T20 as well. Since January 1, 2020, the overall average of batsmen from number 4 to number 7 has been 31, while the total strike rate during this period has been 140. This figure shows India’s strong middle order in T20.
India tried many players in the top 3
Shikhar Dhawan’s poor form forced Team India to make a lot of changes in the top 3. Since 2020, including Rohit-Kohli, India has given 7 in Tests, 11 in ODIs, and 15 players in T20 in the top 3. India’s top 3 is no longer as stable as before, which is now proving to be very expensive.
