Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of the ODI Indian Cricket team, recently after winning the second ODI match against South Africa by 7 wickets, thanked Keshav Maharaj (In place of Tebuma) for taking batting after winning the toss.

Now, all of you might be thinking of what’s the big deal in this. But if you are thinking this way, you might be shocked to know that the professional captain and players don’t think as you do.

South Africa, after winning the toss, chose to bat first and by doing that scored a massive 278 runs with the loss of 7 wickets. Thanks to Mohammed Siraj and the newcomer Shahbaz Ahmed for their crucial innings of 3 and 1 wicket, respectively. And for the rest credit goes to Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar who took 1 wicket each.

Now with the finish of the first innings, it was India’s chance to chase and finish the game and in order to do that , Shikhar Dhawan and Shubham Gill came out to bat scoring 13 and 28 runs, respectively.

But unfortunately, the pair could not stand the proteas bowling side and lost their wickets easily.

The real fun began when the next two players came in the form of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer who by their innings shocked the world audiences around. Shreyas Iyer played a century innings of 113* from 111 deliveries, whereas, his partner Ishan Kishan was cracking Sixers from the other end scoring 93 runs from 84 deliveries.

These two players helped Team India do the heavy lifting, and led and level the win by 1-1. During the post match conference, two interesting things happened. First was when Shikhar Dhawan smiled , thanking Keshav Maharaj for his decision at first. Look at what he said,

“Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). Glad that dew came in at the right time.”

And also added by praising Ishan and Shreyas for their batting and a partnership that was nice to watch.

“Ishan and Shreyas batted so well, that partnership was so nice to watch. It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier”

The second interesting incident that took place at the post match presentation that happened, was from Ishan Kishan who said that he feels more comfortable hitting sixes and it makes sense for him to concentrate on rotating strike which he means by singles.

“Rotate karne ki jaha tak baat hai toh wo kuch players ka strength hota hai, kini ka strength hota hai chhakka marna. Toh mere jaisa koi chhakka bhi itni jaldi nahi maar sakta, main bohut asaani se maarta hu. Wo mera strength hai. Toh agar main chhakke se hi kar leta hu kaam toh rotate ka utna sochta nahi hu”

Meaning,

“Some players have the strength to rotate the strike, my strength is to hit sixes. I hit sixes effortlessly and not many can do that. If I do the job by hitting sixes, there’s no need to think about rotating the strike much,”
