Sunil Gavaskar feels honored after his name was chosen to be named after a 5 stadium in Leicester. This is not the first time that Mr. Gavaskar’s name was chosen but it has been on several other occasions too. There is one stadium in Kentucky, US and one in Tanzania which is named Gavaskar.
But this time it was England who decided to choose the legendary former captain of the Indian team and to be the first captain to have ground after his name in England. In response to the gesture made Mr. Gavaskar said he was honored that a ground in Leicester was being named after him.
“I am delighted and honored that a ground in Leicester is being named after me. Leicester is a city with possibly the strongest supporters of the game, especially the indian cricket, and therefore its is a huge honor indeed”
The initiative was initiated by Keith Vaz, who is the longest serving MP being of Indian origin. Keith for the last 32 years has been representing the UK Parliament and also leads an organization named as Integration Foundation.
“We are thrilled and honored that Gavaskar has agreed to have this pitch and ground named after him. He is a living legend and over the years, has delighted Indians and other lovers of cricket with his record-breaking performances. To us, he is not just the ‘Little Master’, he is a great master of the game. Nothing delights the Indian population of Leicester more than when an all-time great visits us. There is now a part of Britain that is forever Gavaskar,”
Actually the Tanzania’s stadium that we told you about above, its current development only led the initiative to take place at the Leicester Stadium however, the stadium in Kentucky was already named after the cricketer back in 2017.
According to Rash Patel they could not find any suitable name than the 73 years old Gavaskar’s who to them is a better role model.
