India’s former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Shikar Dhawan is still a force to contend with in cricket, especially in ODIs. On 12th July it was his first ODI after his return to international cricket. With India winning by 10 wickets, Dhawan played a good game of hitting 31 runs of 54 balls with 4 fours.

As per NDTV, Sanjay Manjrekar was quoted as saying on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘Sports Over the top:

“Shikhar Dhawan who’s got only one format now that he can cling on but interestingly right through his career, from start to end, if you look at his performance in 50 overs cricket, it’s always been the best. This is a format that suits him best and a format where he’s been excellent. And I’m so glad that selectors have shown faith in him and reminded themselves that Shikhar Dhawan is still a force in 50 overs cricket. So brilliant to see them at the top”.

Though Dhawan is 36, he has maintained his form and kept himself fit. I am sure he must be looking forward to be selected for the 2023 World Cup to be held in India. He is not a contender for the T20Is but seems to show his valuable position as a player for the ODIs with his fantastic performances. He has 6315 runs with an average of 45.80 in 150 ODIs.

His recent performance as a specialist in ODI was also seen in the game with England where he partnered with Rohit Sharma and took 110 runs before he was bowled out. Hence Manjrekar’s support for his place in the Indian team. Speaking of the Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma partnership, Manjrekar was quoted saying:

“I’m glad that Dhawan got these innings together and I hope he keeps on getting these kinds of innings together because Rohit Sharma will be around. He’s playing, you know, all the formats and the left-hand, right-hand combination at the top, I think it’ll be okay,”

Let us see how Dhawan keeps his game and his performance in the ongoing ODIs so that it will give him a place in the 2023 World Cup.
