Key Highlights

  • BCCI this time prefers to go for the right market price as BCCI eyes IPL media rights Bonanzaseparately for each linear and digital media segment
  • The media rights e-auction for the year 2023-27 will be held on June 12, 2022.
  • BCCI plans to divide media rights bid into four categories instead of consolidated bid
  • Through these media rights, BCCI secretary chief Jay Shah emphasizes on “value maximization” rather than “revenue maximization” for the year 2023-2027.

With the start of the Indian Premier Cricket League, the race for media rights season 2023-2027 has also started. The media rights bidding will take place through an e-auction process and is slated to be held on June 12 this year, which is just after the end of this IPL league.

But with the increasing craze for the event, BCCI has something else in mind. BCCI would like to give priority to the correct market price for each linear (TV segment) and digital media segment separately. Earlier, this was not the case where the media rights were sold in consolidation and the BCCI earned ₹16,347.50 crore (last right circle).

Thus, BCCI is taking the experience and knowledge of the past, this time emphasizing on the bidding criteria which is not consolidated but divided into 4 categories. See what a BCCI official has to say on this,

“What we are looking for is the right market price for each vertical,” a BCCI official said.

“There are a few players who may want only digital. Some may want only linear. There are those who may want both. In a consolidated bid, you don’t get the true value of each segment.”

In short, BCCI wants the digital media category to be placed in a separate category so that the Digital India initiative can move at a much faster pace.Although the consolidated approach is giving BCCI more than double, which is around, Rs 32,890 crore from the previous rights cycle, going a bit deeper with the four categories can give even more, emphasizing on “value maximization” rather than “revenue maximization” for the year 2023-2027. Look at what BCCI secretary Jay Shah had to say on the same,

I’ve no doubt that with this process there will not only be revenue maximisation but also value maximisation,”

Another key factor why BCCI is pushing for digital penetration in India is because, it will help speed up the process of the imminent rollout of 5G in the country. And without any consolidated bidding criteria, there will be enough room for global giants like Facebook, Amazon Prime and Google to spread their arms a bit in the Indian market too boosting the Indian economy.

In the IPL tenders, there is an additional 18 non-exclusive bundle of IPL matches which includes the Indian Premier League Football as well, which according to a BCCI insider is for smaller parties, giving companies a separate route to enter the Indian market. These rights are kept separately because it might devalue the current rights exclusivity and by keeping it separate makes it the fourth category i.e., “Rest of the world category”

Don’t be confused. The first category is TV India, Second Category is Digital India, third category is Consolidated, and the fourth is the Rest of the world category.
