Expressing his point of view on an ICC review, the Australian great Ricky Ponting felt Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from the test captaincy was really surprising. He had this conversation with Isha Guha who was the former England women’s cricketer player.

Speaking at the ICC Women’s, the very successful former captain of the Australian team, Ponting revealed that he was ‘really surprised‘ to learn that India’s most successful Test captain had called her time on a leadership role.

Kohli surprised the world on January 15, a day after losing the three-match Test series against South Africa, by announcing his decision to step down from the captaincy of India in the longest format of the game.

“I was shocked, but then I started thinking about other things, even my own time as captain. I have gone on record and said that I probably think I played a couple of years longer than I should have in hindsight. I think I might have been captain for a couple of years longer than I should have”.

The former Australian captain also revealed the reason why he was surprised by recalling the conversation he had with Kohli in the first leg of the Indian Premier League in 2021. Ponting said that Kohli was talking about stepping down from the leadership role then. He also seemed passionate about being a pioneer in white-ball cricket and in the Test format.

“He just loved and cherished that job and that post so much. Obviously, the Indian Test team had achieved a lot under his leadership. When I heard it, I was really, really surprised”

The 34-year-old had resigned as the national team’s T20 captain in November 2021 and was later relieved of the responsibility in ODIs as well. However, his decision to step down from the role in the Test format came as a surprise. According to statistics, Kohli won 40 of the 68 Test matches he led India and is considered the most successful captain of the Indian men’s team in Tests.

Meanwhile, the former Australian captain and legend Ricky Ponting talks about India’s next leader in the longest format. He described Rohit Sharma as a very successful captain, who has won a record 6 trophies in the IPL. After Ponting left the Mumbai Indians team as captain, he was asked who he thinks could be the best player and captain to lead the team again, he suggested Rohit Sharma’s name to take over the leadership in Mumbai Indians.

“There were a few names thrown around between owners and the other coaches but it was really clear to me that there was only one guy that can lead the team – he was a young guy and his name happened to be Rohit Sharma.”
