The PCB or Pakistan Cricket Board has recently decided which is on Friday to introduce separate central contracts for White ball as well as the Red Ball format for all its players. The decision was taken in Board of Governors meeting where the total sum of 15 billion Pakistani Rupees was sanctioned. The approval was given for the cycle year 2022-2023.

So, what was the sole purpose behind such initiative?

The sole purpose behind such initiative was to encourage, incentivise and rewards it high rewarding players to narrow the gap in salaries as well as for de-promoting their elite players from participating in additional off-season foreign events which is including the foreign leagues.

In an official statement released by PCB and what its chairman said, have a look,

“As part of its strategy to incentivise, reward and encourage its high-performing elite cricketers, as well as to narrow the gap in salaries compared to players of other countries, the BoG has approved changes in the men’s central contracts structure,”

“We want to discourage our elite players from signing up for additional off-season events. We feel the players are better off not going to these leagues. We will pay them 50 to 60 percent of the contract amount they are offered where required.”

The new initiative will take place from July 1st and will contain useful packages not only for elite player but also,

  • 10 percent increase will be made across all formats
  • 50 to 60 percent increase for non-playing members which will be for the overall match fee
  • Whereas 15 percent increase for Women’s central cricket
  • There will also be captaincy allowance to compensate the skipper for all his extra efforts and responsibilities

PCB chief Ramiz Raja keeping in mind the two separate contract said that initiative taken to let its players to be fresh and ready, reminding them of their national duties.

“This is a very important season for us we don’t want our players to be tired or burnt out. We want them to be ready and fresh to go for national duties.”

He further added,

“We have four international events in the next 16 months, including two World Cups. This recognition of offering contracts to white-ball specialists will help us to eventually develop two separate squads, which could simultaneously be engaged in white and red-ball cricket. This will also allow us to have a bigger spread of talent to showcase to the world.”

Undoubtedly, the move taken by the PCB is every manner is a good one seeking its national interest but the point noticing here is the timing at which the move has been taken. Recently, we all know how IPL has won the highest media rights becoming the second richest league in the world being next to NFL (National Football League).

And just after the media right victory, BCCI secretary, Jay Shah has announced doubling the pension packages for all its former players including the non-playing staff.

There is no doubt that how lucrative IPL has become and there are many players from across the world who are getting drawn towards the league for its good treatment and pay.

So, the question comes, Is Pakistan Premier League worried about the exposure IPL is giving and also worried about whether its player would also dream of playing in the IPL one day!!

To remind everyone, Pakistan has become the best team across all three formats recently i.e., fifth in the test, 3rd in the ODI, and third again in T20I ICC rankings.

We don’t know but let the time decide!!
