Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene is disappointed with the way it went against Delhi Capitals and surely some change in the law should be dealt with if that doesn’t happen in future.
Mahela, a former Sri Lankan team player, recommended a change in the law to have a system where the third umpire can suggest to the second umpire on the field that whether the decision, he made was right or wrong. This conversation took place with ICC anchor Sanjana Ganesan (wife of JaspritBumrah)
As per the laws, Clause 21.5 of the ICC Playing Conditions states “The third umpire shall review television replays of the bowler’s front foot landing and, if he/she is satisfied that any of these three conditions have not been met, he/she shall immediately advise the bowler’s end umpire who shall in turn immediately call and signal No ball.”
He further added saying,
“Is there an option for the third umpire to look at these things and inform the main umpires that it is a delivery that should be checked. It was disappointing to see that when you stop a game and have people come on to the field, but I honestly believe it was just emotions carrying over in the last over. But the rules say you can’t go to the third umpire to check on those things,”
Apart from this when asked the coach that in similar situation what would they would have done. He said ‘the team would certainly be disappointed in the dugout but getting on the field is never an option’.
But in second place he added which makes the above statement look missing somewhere. Have a look,
“We saw it on television … most of the guys were watching it together and afterwards we had a chat. We probably would have reacted (similarly) in the dugout, but it is never an option to go on to the field,”
Now the question, what does Mahela mean by these two statements of his, because at one point he says
“they would have been disappointed whereas in other he says they would have done the same”. Well, leave it up to you readers who can judge exactly what is going around here.
The primary focus of Mahela was entirely targeting two people from the DC team and there Pravin Amre, the assistant coach of DC and Rishabh Pant, the one who initiated the disruption. He said, the way some people got inside the ground and arguing with the umpire wasn’t in support of the “spirit of the game” and could have been avoided.
Well, we don’t know who is wrong and who is right but one thing we know, in that match Mumbai Indians is out of the league and has no chance to play the playoffs this season. Mumbai Indians would lose 8 consecutive matches in a row was not something was really expected but one thing to remind you is that, this is cricket and everything possible here.
