He served the cricket body for 12 years from 2001 to 2013, during these periods as the head of the BCCI and the ICC. The final decision on the name change will be taken tomorrow at the Emergent Apex Council meeting of the MCA. Wankhede Stadium ranks among the top stadiums in Indian cricket history with some historic moments.

Let us know some interesting facts about Wankhede Stadium:

  1. In 1974, the iconic Wankhede Stadium was built. S.K. Wankhede whose name was used to name the newly built stadium after him. He was the former boss of the Mumbai Cricket Association.
  2. The name of the current Cricket League Commissioner Ravi Shastri is inscribed in a memorial at the Wankhede Stadium. The memorial is for his famous 6 sixes in an over against Baroda in the Ranji Trophy.
  3. The stands at Wankhede Stadium are named after notable Vijay Merchant, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vitthal Divecha (one of the cricket administrators).
  4. The World Cup trophy was lifted at the Wankhede Stadium after beating Sri Lanka in the World Cup final, one of the most iconic wins in Indian cricket history.

Earlier Wankhede Stadium had a capacity of 45000 and the stadium was filled with wooden benches and chairs. But then there was a renewal in 2010, as Wankhede was about to host the final of the ICC World Cup 2011.

The renovation brought about drastic changes in the nature of Wankhede Stadium. MCA planned to increase the height of the stadium from 16 meters to 35 metres, brought in three levels, which would help increase the capacity to 47,000.

Eventually, the plan ended at 29 meters due to permission issues. In addition, suspended cantilever was brought into the roofs, which avoided beam supports to the roofs to ensure a better view for the spectators. And at the same time, the roof was designed to bring in wind from the west, which helps to cool the stadium. Due to the introduction of bucket seats, the capacity was reduced to 33000. To pay tribute to the megastar Sunil Gavaskar, two seats were fixed in the President’s Box for Mr. Gavaskar and his wife.

When Mumbai Indians play their home match, the entire Wankhede turns blue. In many ways, Mumbai Indians has been a gift to the Wankhede Stadium, and it brings more matches to the packed stadium. At the same time, Wankhede Stadium has not failed to provide its home team with the turbocharged atmosphere of T20.
