Mahela Jayawardene, the former legendary player of Sri Lanka’s team, pointed out recently, about the key reasons why India can be confident at the T20 world Cup held in Australia.
Well, the statement comes in a time, when Sri Lanka has won the Asia Cup 2022 tournament by smashing the Pakistan team in the finals by 28 runs. India was knocked earlier during the super 4, which was first against Pakistan and then against the winner, Sri Lanka.
But the Mumbai Indians team head coach feels that India as a team can be confident for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that Virat Kohli has returned back to form and secondly the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah after an injury in the squad.
Speaking about Virat he said,
“He was there and thereabouts pretty much. He just didn’t have that big score under his belt to get that confidence, especially in white-ball cricket, which is always going to happen. There were a few injury concerns in the last 12 months. So not having that consistent run also makes it tough,”
He further added,
“In the Asia Cup he batted well, showed what he is capable of, especially in that batting position. Going forward for India, having that stability in that line-up and having confidence that a guy like Virat is going to be a factor, is going to be a concern for the opposition as well. It’s good to see him batting like that. We need all these brilliant players to be at their best form in a World Cup, and that’s what the World Cup deserves as well,”
However, adding on behalf of Bumrah he said,
“Obviously, not having Jasprit was also a factor. He fills a big gap for them with the new ball and at the back end. That will settle them as well when he is back in Australia,”
Why are Bumrah and Kohli the important key to the Indian squad?
Speaking of Bumrah first, why is in and out an important key into the Indian bowling attack is due to a simple reason and that is his ability to swing in and out and also great ability to bounce the bowl on the pitches like in Australia. Whereas, concerning Kohli being an important key, is because of his ability to play against the Australian bowling attack and scoring runs like anything.
Virat’s coming into the form comes at a time when the T20 WC is on the verge of its start. But even though, Indian side lost the Asia Cup 2022, but the sight in which Kohli scoring his 122* runs against Afghanistan was a sight to behold. His century came after a long drought of 1092 days but when it came, it came with flying colors.
Jayawardene had something to add at the conclusion saying,
“World Cups are about momentum, World Cups are about playing your best cricket at the right time. So as long as they lift their game up to that level, I think India has the quality of players who can do that,”
