After India losing their first ever match against the proteas in the ongoing T20 world cup, many including the likes of legendary Sunil Gavaskar have shown concern. But when we speak of concern, Sunil Gavaskar has a little different angle to view the scenario.

He says and believes Not playing Smart cricket to be the primary reason behind India’s loss. India in a match against the South Africans played a low score, against which South Africa in return with the loss of just 5 wickets summed up the total by 137 runs and won the match. Apart from the smart cricket angle, the former player, Virat kohli dropped a simple catch and thereafter Rohit Sharma missed a simple opportunity to run out Markram was amongst other clinical errors.

Gavaskar opined fielding not to be the major reason but he pointed out smart cricket by the men in blue. He said while speaking to the India today news Channel,

“I think, in cricket, you are going to have situations where catches are going to be dropped, run-out opportunities missed. What you really going to see is that we didn’t score enough runs. On a pitch like this where there is going to be a little bit of a challenge for battes, I think you have got to play it smartly. I don’t think we played smart enough cricket because if you had played smart cricket, we would have had a 150 on the board,”

He (Gavaskar) also pointed out stressing on batters like the batter, Deepak Hooda and Dinesh karthik who’s lack of smart cricketing skills put a lot of pressure on the in-game set batter, Suryakumar Yadav. His only point here was to highlight that if these two players could have played smartly, an additional 15-20 runs could have been effective. However, Gavasker insisted on not pressing the panic button as team India with points were comfortably placed to qualify for the semifinals. He said,

“Yes, let’s not press the panic button at all. We have 4 points and 2 matches to go. 2 matches against opponents we should be able to win. You should never taken any team lightly, Bangladesh has given us a run for the money in T20Is. So, we have to be careful against them, even Zimbabwe, the way they have played in this World Cup, we have to be careful,”

Sunil Gavaskar has recently predicted that in the finals it would be India and Australia playing against each other.
