Australian men’s team head coach Justin Langer has resigned from his duties after he declined an offer of a six-month extension. Langer’s decision came less than 24 hours after an eight-hour marathon meeting of the CA board, where his contract was discussed at length. Langer’s current deal was due to expire in June and he was seeking a longer term extension.

After those discussions, Langer walked away from the job he had coveted. Views of senior players played a large part in Langer’s resignation, with some of the players having broken up with him for nearly 12 months.

DSEG (Management Company of Langer) made this announcement on Saturday. It was a lengthy discussion that ended without a resolution with Langer’s CA board.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley confirmed that the six-month offer would be the end of Langer’s tenure, with the view that it was time to transition into a new coaching era in the men’s team. Langer is said to have taken the decision due to his strained relations with senior players such as Pat Cummins, Tim Paine and limited-overs captain Aaron Finch. The crisis is believed to have started after the disastrous T20I tour of Bangladesh which was held in August last year.

“We very much felt that Justin had earned the right to defend the T20 World Cup on home soil…but we understand and respect his decision,”

Hockley

“We understand…many people will be disappointed by the decision to only offer Justin a short-term contract. The decision to start a process of transition is what we believe is in the best interest of the men’s team for unity and future success.”

Hockley further added

Subsequently, the broken relationship between players and coach meetings was mediated by former CA president Earl Eddings and Hockley. Langer held more than 30 in-person Zoom meetings with players and staff while in quarantine to hear complaints about his coaching style. He vowed to change his style and believes he did it through the T20 World Cup and the Ashes where he was far less involved in day-to-day coaching and far more relaxed than before.

“In the middle of this year we did have some some challenging conversations and some issues and I think credit to absolutely everybody throughout the national teams set up for having some really robust and direct conversations,”

Hockley

Meanwhile, Andrew McDonald has been made interim coach. Andrew will lead the team for the T20I series against Sri Lanka, while Langer has been ruled out. Just after the Sri Lanka tour, another assistant coach is likely to lead the team for the Pakistan tour on a short-term basis.

Australia went on to win the T20 World Cup and the Ashes brilliantly and Langer believed that would be more than enough to keep his job going forward.

When the media asked Pat and Finch if they wanted to see Langer as their head coach again, the players did not respond well and were given private advice.
