Lalit Modi, who started the IPL, was the Vice President of BCCI from 2005 to 2010. Lalit Modi took over as the chairman and then commissioner of the IPL from 2008 to 2010. At the same time, due to controversies in 2010, he was suspended from the post of commissioner of IPL and BCCI.

Lalit Modi worked to change the BCCI in 2007. He sold the title and grounds rights to the sports group for $1.73 billion. Also announced to start IPL. TV rights were sold for around 1.73.

IPL was organized in 2008. Eight franchises paid $111.9 million for their teams. Lalit Modi was made the commissioner of IPL.

The Rajasthan Cricket Association elections were held in 2009. In this, allegations of fraud were leveled against Lalit Modi. Sanjay Dixit was defeated in the election. In 2010, information about the Kochi Tuskers Kerala team was shared by Lalit Modi on Twitter. There was a lot of controversy over this. He had tweeted targeting Shashi Tharoor. Due to this Shashi Tharoor also had to resign from the post of minister. The investigation of the Kochi team began.

In April 2010, BCCI suspended Lalit Modi on charges of embezzlement and issued a show cause notice. Modi demanded an independent inquiry from the BCCI. He went to the High Court against the decision of the Board. Left India and reached London and then started a legal battle against the board from there.

Lalit Modi declared bankruptcy in London in 2012. In 2013, the BCCI found him guilty of various charges including indiscipline and misconduct. In the SGM meeting, the BCCI imposed a life ban on Modi.
