The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be presented with a golden opportunity to represent itself for a bid to include Cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will have its annual meeting session in Mumbai next year, where cricket along with several other sports will be given the opportunity to bid for a place in the Los Angeles Olympics. According to an ICC official after being asked about the IOC’s stand on including more games.
“Nine disciplines are on the shortlist of international federations invited to submit RFI (Request for Information) proposals for the LA28 Olympic sport programme review,”
As things stand, the biggest barrier for Cricket will be the number permitted athletes, that should not extend more than 10, 500. If Cricket does get included in the Los Angeles games there could be an unnecessary stretch on the resources. Also, the popularity of the games in North America, South America and Africa could hinder its progress for the bid.
“Beyond the initial 28 sports, the organizing committee for the LA28 Games has the opportunity, but not an obligation, to propose additional new sports for inclusion in the LA28 Olympic program”
It was further added,
“In the coming months, LA28 and the IOC will work with international federations to review disciplines with the evaluation criteria”
The criteria will also aid in the evaluation of potential new sports for the LA28 Olympic Games,” IOC officials said.
The other games that are on the agenda include Karate, break-dance, flag football, kickboxing, lacrosse and squash. All the sports authorities will be asked to present in front of the IOC next year, in order to gain a place in the 2028 Olympics. The ICC have a definite plan for the bids to be raised and have a gross sum of around $3million ready.
The ICC has tasked communications firm Burson Cohn & Wolfe with establishing a strong PR campaign. If the bid does go successful it will be for the first time since the 1900 Olympics, that Cricket will make its comeback into the Olympics. In the 1900, Paris Olympics, only England and France participated in the games.
