Alyssa Healy has been named the vice-captain of the Women’s national team by Cricket Australia on Thursday. After becoming the vice-captain, the the-32-year-old wicketkeeper batter is now set to Lead Australia Women in the tour of India in December.

With World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning still on her indefinite break, Healy could be donning the skipper’s cap for the team’s upcoming fixtures that include five T20I games in India before the home series against Pakistan Women and T20 World Cup in February next year in South Africa. Earlier, the mega tournament was scheduled to be held at the end of 2022 which had been moved due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Lanning had taken an indefinite break to focus on her self-following Australia’s successful Commonwealth Games campaign which saw them win the title in August.

“It’s a great moment in what’s been a really interesting career of mine. To have a defined leadership role within this group gives me a moment to sit back, refocus and put some new thoughts into what cricket might look like for me moving forward,” Healy was quoted in a post on the Australian Women’s Cricket Team’s official Twitter handle.

The right-handed wicketkeeper batter is not new to the role having served as the temporary vice-captain in the multi-format series against India last year in Haynes’s absence.

Head of Performance of Women’s Cricket and Australia’s national selector Shawn Flegler has heaped praise on Healy. He said,

“We’re delighted that Alyssa has agreed to take on the role of vice-captain and look forward to the contribution she can make in tandem with Meg.”

Cricket Australia also announced that Dan Marsh and Scott Prestwidge will serve the national team as assistant coaches. The two will be doing their job under head coach Shelley Nitschke.
