Australia’s young leg-spinner Adam Zampa has recently been in the news for his opinion and is disappointed to be not picked for the IPL series this season. Zampa believes that this year (according to the auction data) many foreign players were not picked this year and especially the spinners. He says that he saw a few spinners getting selected from the Indian team but when it comes to the overseas side of the spinners, very little were seen through.
In the trend of mega auctions, franchises spend a lot of money for fast bowlers. Many Indian spinners also got good contracts but foreign spinners were ignored. Speaking about the same, Zampa felt that being a specialist spinner is not that important.
“It’s very hard as an overseas spinner, particularly if you’re just a specialist spinner who’s not so much of a mystery spinner. The mega auction, the way it panned out, they spent a lot of money on fast bowlers, a lot of money on allrounders, and even batsmen don’t get great money. They get okay money,”
Australian player Zampa was part of the Royal Challengers team last year, which played in the United Arab Emirates, although he opted out from the season that year in the second leg of the IPL series, which could possibly be the reason Zampa was not picked this year.
Zampa emphasized on Franchisees taking or following Indian players which undoubtedly are good when it comes to perform on Indian pitches which a lot of spin to offer. However, keeping a positive outlook, the player is optimistic about securing the contract in the next season hopefully.
“And then once all that money gets spent, they go, ‘Okay, we need some spinners now,’ and usually they feel like the local guys can do an okay job anyway. I think there’ll be opportunities maybe next year with the IPL though… I think I’d be a valuable addition to any of those squads, particularly with the way that I’m bowling at the moment,”
