5 Cricket Rules That ICC Needs to Dump Right Away: There have been many occasions in cricket when the outcome of a tournament has not been fair according to the rules. Due to bias, the undefeated team went ahead and was declared the winner. As a result, cricket fans were outraged.

In 2019, the dual role of the ICC regulatory body and its baseless rules became known to the world. Both teams playing in the finals of this year’s World Cup scored the same number of runs and the match ended in a tie. No team lost in the final, but one team did win the World Cup.

It raises questions about the prestige of the World Cup. Many are of the view that the ICC rules should be removed immediately so that the controversy does not escalate when there are more World Cups to be held under the auspices of the cricket body in the future.

Experts stated that the only rule in cricket circles is that the ICC rules should be amended immediately or broken permanently. Now, let’s discuss the rules that need to remove from cricket immediately.

5 Cricket Rules That ICC Needs to Dump Right Away

Tied Super Over

First, understand the meaning of Super Over. In actuality, the match that goes in the Super Over is officially declared as a tie. As per this rule, the team that scores the most runs in the Super Over will be declared as a winner. The winner decision is taken on the basis of the number of boundaries scored in the whole match.

A similar confusion arises in the case of the Super Over during the process of deciding the winner of the World Cup final between England and New Zealand. The ICC then said that in case of a super-over tie, the team that hits more fours wins the match.

On this, New Zealand captain Ken Williamson said that the rules for deciding the World Cup winner, in the end, are “hard to swallow”. The former cricket player from India Gautam Gambhir has criticized the ICC rules for being ridiculous.

Overthrow off batsman’s bat or body

The rule of Overflow off has been a very defensive rule of cricket that offers extra runs to the batsman if the ball touches the batsman’s bat or body and goes beyond the boundary the batsman gets extra runs before touching the crease.

It happened in the last ICC World Cup. The batsman from England got 4 runs when he was about to get out from the game. The bowler from New Zealand wanted to run out the batsman and in between the ball touches the batsman’s body and passes the boundary. He got the extra 4 runs and so England got the trophy. It’s a game of fortunate and unfortunate. The bowler apologized for his action, but in the end, it was of no use for the team to which he was belonging to.

It was not the first time when this happens by the rule of Overthrow. ICC should remove controversial trial law.

Soft Signal

Soft Signal is a law in cricket introduced in 2014. It is for clear decision-making between the on-field umpire and third umpire to check the valid catch.

The catches by the bowlers do not look clear on the television screen. Instead of the third umpire, the umpire on the field can judge the catch more relevantly. It becomes difficult to overrule at the time when there are some disputed catches and an umpire has to give an immediate reaction. So, this picture gets clearly seen on Television Sets when the camera runs from all directions with multiple angles so that a borderline catch can be seen clearly on TV as that of on-field umpire can see. From the whole concept and purpose behind this rule, it seems very bizarre, and also it creates unnecessary confusion.

On-field No-ball

We all are familiar with the concept of No-ball, as no-ball is an illegal delivery to the batsman and it results in the extra run to the opposite team. It is just one type of no-ball that is mentioned here. There are several types of o-filed no-ball.

No-ball occurs when a bowler steps out of the boundary line of the crease. It is also a no-ball when the bowler’s back foot touches the land. There are also some dangerous or unfair no-balls thrown by the bowlers. At this moment, the umpire’s job becomes very difficult.

Calling the no-ball, the runout decision, the LBW decision is all hard work, keeping a close eye on the line and length of each ball that can be called LBW. Technology is also on the lookout for nearby catches – the umpire’s front-foot no-ball call needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

Often an inadvertent ball also determines the future of a no-ball match. The perfect example for this is a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in which referee Lasith Malinga could not find a no-ball. Due to this, the bowling team got declared to be a winner.

To minimize the responsibility of the on-field umpire, TV umpires are appointed for front-foot no-ball.

DRS dead ball rule

Decision Review System is a technology-based system in cricket that helps for making decisions related to pitch and other aspects. The decision made by the on-field umpire is discussed with the third umpire and then the final decision comes out. But in the case of ties Super Over, the decisions may affect the final results. If the ball touches the leg pad of the batsman during the match, he gets an extra run, then the opposite team appeals. In that situation, DRS gives a valid decision in favor of the team that did the bowling?

Its answer is No. Because, as per the DRS, the ball is deemed dead as soon as the umpire gives his decision. So, in cases like this, a wrong decision gets delivered. That’s why many of the cricket fans and followers are demanding to ban this rule from ICC’s rule book.

Besides these 5, the ICC rule book has some other set of rules which are complex and complicated to understand. And it creates controversy as cricket is a global game and many emotions have been attached to the game. So, there is always a fair and unfair state of decision arises. In such a situation, it becomes very difficult for players. Because every player represents their nation with complete loyalty and hard work. Due to these rules and force for application, the players get disappointed.
